Choosing what matters most to your club is not a shortcut. It is the foundation of meaningful sustainability work.
What your club does is choose sustainability goals that it can realistically influence. A links course on sand and a parkland club with a restaurant and forty staff do not have the same priorities. Water may be the whole story at one club and barely register at another.
You provide the direction. We provide the system.
The framework is already built.
The structure, the governing documents and the supporting forms are written and ready to use. There is nothing for your club to build.
The only decision you have to make is what matters most to your club and what you want to achieve.
What VSME is
Few golf clubs have heard of VSME. Banks, municipalities and investors have.
VSME is the European reporting standard for smaller organisations. Nobody is going to fine a golf club for not using it — but it is the format the people asking already recognise, and it is built for organisations exactly this size.
You do not have to care about the acronym. The work behind it is the same work you are already doing: water, energy, chemicals, waste, and looking after the people on the course.
Why it is worth doing
The questions are already arriving.
- Banks — before lending on irrigation, machinery or a clubhouse
- Municipalities — on leases, water and planning
- Sponsors and corporate members — because their own reporting cascades down
- Federations — on grants and certification
- The board — because how the club is run is what a board is elected to worry about

The standard is voluntary. The people asking are not — and unlike a deadline, they give no notice.
One standard replaces many questionnaires. VSME is the format they all recognise, so you answer once.
You are already part way there.
The health and safety work counts. The VSME documentation is what’s missing.
Part of VSME covers workforce health and safety. Documenting the work is the first step. A club running its occupational health and safety compliance properly means the second layer costs far less than it looks.
